PORTAL Zine
Collecting and analysing data, Critical writing
For the research project Portal, fashion artist and designer Elisa van Joolen worked together with students of the ArtEZ Fashion Strategy Master. Researching the economic, social and emotional value of clothing worn by visitors of the Change the System exhibition at the Boijmans van Beuningen museum.
By collecting data from their wearers, we considered the production, ownership, value and materiality of clothes. Starting from the objective, then moving to the emotional, making new connections by literally drawing new lines between the worn items of the various visitors, and thus create a network that reveals a complex and layered system of the reality of clothing.
Within my analysis, I focused on the online-offline consumption of fashion of the participants. Researching how the senses play part in the purchase of a garment. Discovering that the main, and often only sense, that is used for online fashion presentation is the sight. In the chapter that I wrote for the PORTAL Zine, I elaborated on how acknowledging the other senses through haptic visuality could benefit the online world of fashion. The end results were published in the PORTAL zine and presented during the round table discussion at the Boijmans van Beuningen Museum.
